Mining, Fishing and Forestry

Overview

With its rich supply of natural resources, Canada ranks as a global leader in mining, forestry and fishing, and each of these sectors contributes significantly to the country’s economy.

Canadian mining companies are key producers of many critical minerals and metals, including potash, uranium, aluminum, copper, nickel and rare earth elements. Many of the world’s top mining companies are headquartered in Canada and operate both domestically and internationally, including in North and South America, Africa, Australasia and Europe.

Canada's forests represent nearly 9% of the world's total forested area and, as such, the sector is one of the country’s leading sources of trade exports, including traditional logging, pulp and paper, and solid wood products, as well as emerging bioproducts that are increasingly used as fossil fuel substitutes in producing pharmaceuticals, plastics, chemicals and personal care products.

Canada boasts an abundance of lakes and rivers and has the longest coastline in the world, with direct access to the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  This has resulted in a diverse fishing and seafood industry that is an important source of employment and export for the national economy.

Canada’s natural resource sectors continue to evolve in response to shifting market demands and priorities.  These industries benefit from continued strong economic growth in emerging markets and also face a variety of challenges that include fluctuating commodity prices, increased development costs, and a global trends to greater environmental awareness and regulations.
